Restaurant Ban Lee

The chicken rice seller. ( Was early today)
After church this morning, we decided to head to Ban Lee, which is on the way back home. A slight detour and we arrived within 5 minutes from church. Sometimes the chicken rice seller is late to hang his chickens up, he would be in the kitchen sorting out his chickens. Lucky for us today,he was early so we didn't have to wait for him. The business is good, just count the number of chickens he has hanging at his stall. And he also has just as many in the kitchen at the back of the restaurant. If you come slightly later, there is usually a queue at his stall.
Chicken with some pork and cucumbers
I'm biased. I'm going to rate this chicken rice a 6/10. The chicken could have a bit more taste. It's soft enough but quite a bit of bones and the sauce lacks taste. Also, a thicker sauce would be good.
The rice ( carbs I know)
The rice looks good in this picture. It isn't as fragrant as I would like it. So I'm assuming there's less fat involved in the cooking process. Which is good for my diet, but less satisfying to eat as a meal. They don't serve ginger sauce with this. Neither do we have the thick dark black soya sauce.

The best chicken rice is from Raub, Pahang. The mother buys it for us when we're home and it tastes so nice you would want to eat every last bit of the rice up. That's a 10/10.

Dinner after Maundy Thursday mass(Jalan Ipoh)

Kam Heong Pork
Kam Heong (金香)crabs or prawns are the usual dishes fried this way. We asked ( and got) Kam Heong pork yesterday evening. And here it is shown above. Quite tasty. I wished they had more fried bits at the side and that it was served with icy cold cucumbers at the side. The words Kam Heong translates to golden fragrance in Cantonese.  You can taste dried shrimps shallots and garlic in this sauce. And Google tells me there is curry powder to be added to the list. Who would have thought?

Yau mak with Chilli padi
This dish was very nice because it had some chilli padi mixed with the vegetable giving it a spicy tone when you chew. This is lettuce cooked with fermented bean curd. I wish they had more of a gravy with this. And there was rather sparse fermented bean curd in our plate of lettuce. The saving grace as the spiciness courtesy of the chillies.
Eggs done just right
We also had fried eggs with minimal accompaniment done just right. With the yolk flowing out once you poke it with your fork. Definitely served fresh eggs otherwise this wouldn't be a success. The chef walked by purposefully and asked whether the eggs flowed out as ordered? Haha.

This restaurant sells porridge as well. But for some reason, the porridge stall was closed yesterday. It rained while we were in church, huge downpour which cooled the temperature but made many messy puddles along the road. I got a bit wet walking from church to the car but thankfully it eased off as mass ended.I can't remember the name of this restaurant but I will add the name once I locate my phone and look at swarm app because I checked in here last night.

Restaurant Wong Kim

Porridge
I love porridge. For a short while I used to love teochew porridge; watery variety with a whole lot of condiments including fried dace ( my favourite) but now I'm settling for porridge with decent amount of meat , eggs  and some ginger bits inside. This was dinner yesterday at Restaurant Wong Kim. found by chance as we drove pass Jalan Ipoh in search of another porridge place we'd been to once before. So it shows, its important to keep your eyes open for any other shops along the way.

This restaurant is clean and brightly lit. A plus point. The porridge did take its time coming to the table. And we were the only customers for porridge so I'm thinking on a normal day, the lady would have to either speed up the cooking process or warn customers it'll be a long wait. Was it worth the wait? Yes. It didn't disappoint. And I'll be returning to this place for porridge very soon.

Subway sandwich

After stations of the cross and mass, we headed for a quick bite.  Subway appeared a logical place. Subway Rivercity Jalan Ipoh. Quiet place. From this picture it looks like we were the only customers. The couple beside us arrived later and left before us. They gobbled up their sandwiches. They did. We ate daintily and as a result left much later.

Rivercity at night is deserted which is sad. Only a few stalls were opened and 4-5 people seated looking tired and sad. There was a little girl who begged for food.  But the lighting of the place made it look posh. And due to the low level, nothing more than 1 story and the open space in between it was nice to walk from the open air carpark through shops to Subway. It is odd to find an read along Jalan Ipoh not densely populated with shops and people and cars.

Back to Subway and its meal. They had a rather limited selection and not much veg. The usual kiosk appeared smaller and less pots of vegetable selection. I had seafood. Being Friday that was the obvious choice and I think it tasted different and decidedly less than a normal portion. I still think the Subway at Plaza Damas serves the best Subway sandwiches.
