Letterbox invaders

During Christmas, our resident stray made us a gift of three kitties in the letterbox. The daily help had a fright when she attempted to collect mail one morning. She found a set of angry eyes looking out at her....I suspect the mothercat didnt take to intruders.

We haven't named them. As a rule, nobody in the family cares very much for cats. They litter in the garden, they steal food from the back kitchen..and they meow in an irritating way when they want something. Having said that, I think the kittens will make their home with us for the time being.

15 years ago, a tortoiseshell wildcat littered in the basket the milkman used to leave pints in (training a Belgian milkman to do that is no easy task, I can tell you).

Two of the kittens left huddled in the jacket of a young man who had delivered my mother's new sideboard, as a present for his girlfriend. One was left. And thus Pickle, the most beautiful, bad-tempered, character-filled cat I have ever met, came into our family.

She woke me up for an earthquake in 1991. In 2000 she found a water leak behind my parents' fridge. After my parents left Belgium, she lived with me for 10 years until the law changed and I could get her a passport and take her back to England to live in my parents' enormous overgrown garden where she is a lot happier.

She's 15 now, fat, bad-tempered, and balding, but she still leaves mice entrails on the kitchen floor for my mother's bare feet to find early in the morning. She sleeps on my father's belly after lunch. We shall all be heartbroken when she dies.

Keep your cats, or at least one of them. Fate has brought them to you for a reason.

How adorable. And, each one is so different. We have three cats; they're not so bad.

I didn't know cats well, when I had my first as a pet at the age of 19. That said, I was shocked when I heard all kinds of squeaking and mewling coming from a dresser drawer; she'd crept in and delivered 5, right in the middle of all my clothes.

Well...a fun experience, a house full of kittens, and I actually found good homes for all of them when the time was right...

But I'm a more responsible pet-owner now, and have properly spayed my current kitty. She is 15, and so fat she's almost a perfect sphere, with ears.

anne: agreed:) The one with tbe head tilted sideways looks like it has its priorities right. As for the one with its bum facing us, now that's gonna grow up to be one bashful cat.

aunty marianne: Thank you for sharing this. Do you know....reading that has allowed my mind to think of cats as decent folks. But like humans, I'm sure you have good cats as well as bad cats. You have what sounds like a loving gorgeous cat.I'm so envious.

Fred: I see the vote is unanimous ...ie keep the kitties. I shall have to sit down and think .

gnightgirl: My first pet was around the same age as you. ( the stray dog we adopted doesn't count ) And so...the first pet was a pet terrapin. When I found it upside down one morning before brushing my teeth...I burst into tears and howled. The entire household went into mourning. Since then...we've had two kitties...( who died as well) and two stray dogs....one names fido and the other named phoebe.

Last pet was more than ten years ago. Since then its been a pet-less few years.

Is it time to change that?
